Is Wikipedia on a Downward Trend?

Wikipedia is a big source for information and facts, with millions using it every single day. The site relies on donations to keep going, and over the past couple of years we have seen numerous messages posted on the site alerting people that the future of Wiki stands with the people, and donations are what will bring that future to us.

News was announced today that Wikipedia is going through a Recruitment Crisis, in the way that there is a big lack of new administrators being hired on the site to moderate and keep things in tip top shape.

Jimmy Wales, the Founder of the 6th most visited website in the world according to Alexa, has denied the story that has hit the news.

The issue has arisen that less administration staff are being hired because they are not needed. The reason for this would that less people are getting involved with Wikipedia, in the means of adding content to the site which then goes through an Approval process before being approved by a site admin. This issue may have arisen from the fact that almost everything in existence is covered on the site, so it is hard for users to find new things to add content about.

Right now there are 1,461 admins on the site. These users work on moderating new content being added and ensure that there is no spam, false information being posted and important features being deleted from the site.

As you can see from the following graph, courtesy of The Atlantic, there was a huge rise in new admins being hired, as Wikipedia grew in traffic rates and saw much more content being added to the site.

We hope Wikipedia can recover. Nothing major can happen yet, considering the massive amount of people who access the site on a daily basis, but if this continues and near to no content is being added to the site, then we could see a downturn in traffic too. We will keep you posted on the development of this company, and hopefully we can see an upward trend once again soon.
