Lizzie Armitstead has become the first person to win a medal for Team GB this Olympics. Worries were kicking in when no medals had yet been one, but Lizzie has started the trend and sealed the deal with a win in the Women’s Road Race finishing in second place. The race was dangerous with the bad weather and road racing tires, but the team held out well leading to the podium position finish.
She didn’t have enough power left in her legs to outdo Marianne Vos in the final sprint down The Mall next to Buckingham Palace, but she held out and didn’t fall to third place with Olga Zabelinskaya on her tail right behind. She had more strength in her legs, so she put it to good use. The medal looks great on her.
The race was worrying, with the weather turning bad right from the start. The same corner that caused problems in the Men’s Road Race the previous day almost claimed a crash of someone else in the Woman’s Race, but luckily she held on. We don’t have the name to hand unfortunately.
Lots of people were getting annoyed watching it on TV as the race didn’t seem to be updated as much as it should of been, with the wrong names being read out of the leaders on multiple occasions. This was taken to Twitter and Jake Humphrey ended up apologising about it after the race finished and it went back to the studio at Olympic Park. Its good to see they are paying attention to the Social Media response.
Let’s bring on some more medals for Team GB! Although right now it seems no country stands a chance against China.
