What happened at Notting Hill Carnival 2012? - Suck My Trend

What happened at Notting Hill Carnival 2012?

For the past two days Notting Hill Carnival has paraded the streets with colour, costume and communities. Overall it was a big success as thousands went to see the event. Sunday marked a family day and Bank Holiday Monday had a more adult agenda. After the security over the Olympic period, the police was on it today. In total only 150 arrests took place over the two days, and only two stabbings. Compared to last years statistics this was almost perfection.

However, on the way home from todays event (after battling with closed tube stations because of crowding), we noticed some activity surrounding Kings Cross station. Over 20 police vehicles were parked and a large group of police officers were forming and being briefed about an incident. It wasn’t until we got home that we heard what had actually happened. They were targeting a large group who were suspicious of making their way to the carnival to cause disruption. In total 30 people were stopped and out of these 15 have been arrested on charges of “breaching the peace”.

Although this sounds rather dramatic, it shouldn’t put you off visiting the parade next year as it is an amazing experience. A gallery of my own personal images is below to show you the Caribbean spirit and the variety of floats and costumes.
