The Irish version of The Daily Star could be closed after Topless images were posted of Kate Middleton in the paper. The paper tried to be clever with only posting the images in their Republic of Ireland edition which is not affiliated with the UK. However, with the paper having versions in both Northern Ireland and the UK, this is still disrespectful and is causing issues internally within the company.
The Union behind the paper has confirmed that there is fear, anger and panic, as the Editor in Chief Richard Desmond will cut up to 100 jobs at the paper, and potentially close the paper down for publishing the images that it did.
But what did Desmond actually say that has caused all this panic and worry?
“very angry at the decision to publish these photographs and [was] taking immediate steps to close down the joint venture”
It would seem that this is a threat which will be taken very seriously as he has said that he will be taking steps to have the paper closed down immediately. Of course Richard Desmond is thinking of himself more than any one else. He is well known in the UK, and with all this stuff going on around the Leveson Inquiry, things need to be good in the paper, and pictures of the Royal Family nude don’t really go down too well. Desmond will close the paper to save his own skin. We are trying to find out if he knew about the job that was being done. If 100 jobs are to be cut, then they must have all been involved in some way. It was a major feature after all. How could the overseeing editor not be aware of this, and why was not a single call made before hand, considering the complexity of the story, and also the fact that Closer in France had already published it the day before. Sounds a little fishy to us over here at Suck My Trend HQ.
We will keep you updated with all the news regarding this paper. After the closure of the News of the World, this could be another major newspaper being closed down. Could this cause repercussions for the UK and Northern Ireland versions of The Daily Star?
