Xbox Live Removes Social Networking Apps You Weren’t Using Anyway

With Facebook and Twitter integration in almost every aspect of the internet these days, its hard to imagine a service or device that wasn’t able to utilize their services. However, Microsoft is taking a different approach – retiring the Facebook and Twitter apps from the Xbox 360 console and not offering an alternative solution.

When speaking to IGN, Microsoft explained that the removal of the social media apps was meant to streamline the Xbox’s functionality as a media center. The main focus of the newest firmware update is directing users toward media discovery and consumption. With so many other ways to access our favorite social platforms, did we really need it on our gaming consoles? From my experience using these apps, it was clear that very few of my friends utilized these apps on the Xbox anyhow. I would guess that the limited functionality of the applications also played a pivotal role in their removal.

If we ever see Facebook or Twitter return to the Xbox 360, we can bet that they would be completely rebuilt and include much more features that integrate with the native user experience. In the meantime, a simple workaround may be found in the use of the new Internet Explorer app.
