Facebook Messenger to Gain Video Chat - Suck My Trend

Facebook Messenger to Gain Video Chat

As you may recall, it took Facebook an embarrassingly long amount of time to release an iPad-specific version of the social networking app. It had existed long before on other iOS and Android devices, but there was no iteration that took advantage of the screen size and capabilities of the iPad. Still with no solution in place, users were introduced to the Facebook Messenger app that added some additional features to Facebook Chat that the main app didn’t deliver, as well as created a way to quickly check messages without hassel. It too lacked native iPad support.

With Facebook’s acquisition of Skype, a leader in internet voice and video chatting services, we have long expected much integration between the two companies. Apart from browser-based video chatting within the Facebook site itself, we haven’t seen much in way of Skype integration in a mobile aspect. Until now, that is…

Facebook software engineers are already working on a port for Facebook Messenger that will provide full support for the iPad. It is also said that the new version will include the ability to video chat with people on your friends list, much like what is available on a desktop experience. Whether or not this feature will be extended to all iOS and Android devices in a timely fashion is still to be determined. However, a source for 9to5Mac claims:

…Facebook is also working on an updated version of the iPhone app with Skype video chat support and improved performance. The new iPhone app will likely come before an updated Facebook Messenger for Android with similarly new functionality…

The same source goes on to claim that the app is already being beta tested on Facebook’s internal servers, which could likely mean a launch of later this Summer – perhaps into the Fall. Although there are separate Skype and Facebook apps available to essentially get the same job done, it is nice to see a marriage between the two, especially for those who value both services. It is also convenient to stay caught up on Facebook and Skype at the same time.

Is this something that excites any of you? What other features might you like to see in the new Facebook Messenger?
