McKayla Maroney, American gymnast and double Olympic medallist, made internet history yesterday at the White House. Maroney, who famously pulled a disapproving expression as she stood on the podium to receive a silver medal at the London 2012 Olympics, almost instantly became the subject of an internet meme entitled ‘McKayla Maroney is not impressed’.

It appears that the meme was so widespread that it had even caught the attention of the White House. The US 2012 gymnastic team paid a visit to newly-re-elected President Obama last Thursday, and Obama had a whimsical picture taken just with McKayla in which they both pulled the ‘unimpressed’ face.

After the incident, McKayla tweeted, “Did I just do the Not Impressed face with the President..?”, and the post has since been shared and favourited by over a thousand Twitter users. Other reactions to the photograph jokingly suggest that the President is ‘not impressed’ with the fiscal cliff, or Donald Trump’s Twitter tirade against him. One thing that is for certain is that Obama has resurrected this meme and taken it to a whole new level.
