For me personally, I remember Lycos for the Tripod service that it offered. It was the first time I got into Website creation and I was never a big fan of Geocities for some reason, which was of course Lycos’s main competition at the time.
Lycos then wanted to reach out and offer more services and they tried this with a search engine. They were competition to the big names around the late 90s, however the big names dominated and Yahoo eventually struck a deal with Lycos to provide them with search results. They are now more of a syndication partner than anything.
2013 is set to see a change however and Lycos is working on their own technology to provide a search engine, something that will take the world by storm. Let’s hope their timing is right as this is all happening around the same time as Yahoo is currently working hard on plenty of new features with their new Google style CEO, Marissa Mayer.
They are not saying too much about the new search features that will be coming in 2013, but we are seeing those press releases and already this has become a trending story in the tech and web world, especially with the thousands who remember using the services before Yahoo and Google dominated the search scene.
Lycos says that they are not trying to compete again with these big names:
“I don’t think that we aspire to take on Google,”
Instead they plan on offering search results in an alternative way, a way which we won’t get to have a sneaky peak at until 2013 arrives and they make another press release.
Good luck to them, but to bring back a brand that has been off the radar for this long is going to be a huge challenge. We can’t wait to hear more.
