Wikipedia is full of trending activity from around the web. Articles can be found on pretty much any subject, and if you find something missing you can even add it yourself and add to the incredibly large database of text, images and sources.

This year some pages were viewed millions of times, and we have the top 10 right here. The list is in order from the tenth most popular search time right up to the top one. The top one to be honest is fairly obvious, got to be honest.

10 – The Hunger Games

hunger_games

The page is linked to the book, but in fact it was the release of the movie this year which caused the huge surge in searches of The Hunger Games. I actually got the film for Christmas and it was very good.

9 – Google

Lot’s of people appear to enjoy typing Google into Google, and then reading about the company as well. The Google page on Wikipedia is full of information and is a very high quality page written by expert authors, so it is worth a read if you haven’t already. Kind of explains the popularity.

8 – The Dark Knight Rises

This film based on the Batman character is very popular, and was one of the top grossing films of the year bringing in half a billion dollars. The film is brilliant and understandably one the top favorites of the year.

7 – 2012 phenomenon

The world was supposed to end in December. Some reckoned it would be on 12/12/12 because the date was the same, and then others felt it would be 21st December 2012 as that is when the Mayan Calendar supposedly ends. For both of them, the world didn’t end, but it didn’t stop everyone searching for the articles related to it.

6 – Fifty Shades of Grey

These three books became a huge reading sensation this year. The adult themed content is something we have not seen become so commercial within books before and everyone wanted to grab a piece of it. The National Health Service even reported that pregnancies and newborns had surged this year and they believe it is due to these books having an effect on many people’s sexy time.

5 – The Avengers

This film is a superhero flick based on Marvel Comics. It brought in over $620 million, which is more than what Batman managed with The Dark Knight Rises. It is also one of the top 5 searched terms on Wikipedia this year too.

4 – One Direction

The hugely world known band has become a massive hit this year. After it’s success on X Factor the UK went crazy, and then One Direction headed in other directions all around the world, one step at a time.

3 – Deaths in 2012

celebrity_deaths_2012

Lots of famous people died in 2012, and we have a list of the big trends there too. Everyone seemed to want to know who had died, and that is why this page is in the top three most visited in 2012 on Wikipedia.

2 – Wiki

wikipedia_jigsaw

This one is obvious. Wikipedia already ranks high for most things, so it’s own name is usually going to be at the top of the search results. A lot of people rather type in Wiki and then click the first link, which instead of being the homepage of Wikipedia, is the page showing what Wiki is all about. That explains why this is second place.

1 – Facebook

I told you it was obvious. But then why are people interested in what Facebook is all about so much so to make this the most popular search term? Well it could be people typing in Facebook to their address bars and seeing search results, and instead of going to Facebook, they go to the Wikipedia page instead by accident. After all, Facebook is the most searched for term on Google.

What about the Numbers?

If you are interested in the numbers involved in these searches, then we also have those:
