Apple’s App downloads are growing at a very fast rate. Many more users are gaining mobile phones that are capable of installing Apps, and a lot more people are picking up an iPhone at some point. The iPad is now an extremely popular gadget too and that is capable of installing Applications too from the Apple App Store. This means that there are many more opportunities for downloads and it is showing.
Since 2008 there have now been 40 billion downloads of Apps. Half of those, 20 billion, were downloaded in 2012. That’s a big year for Apple. 2 billion of them alone were downloaded in December as thousands got a new iPhone or iPad as a Christmas gift. The iPad was top on many wishlists this Christmas and last year it was estimated 2012 would be the “year of the tablet”. They were right.
There are now over 750,000 Apps available in the App store. 300,000 of these are specifically designed for the iPad. That’s almost half which is very good considering the iPhone is a lot older. Many iPad apps were already available, but a lot of developers installed updates because the new iPad, the iPad 3, has a retina display meaning it can display apps in much better quality. They need to be made compatible first however.
