The hashtag is one of the most iconic features of the micro-blogging site Twitter. Adding a ”#” in front of words or phrases enables users to easily search for them and join in a massive public conversation about these topics. The hashtag is widely known within modern culture and is helping to increase Twitter’s advertising revenue. This is likely to be one of the reasons why Facebook plans to copy the Twitter hashtag by incorporating this feature onto its own site.
